We are the Underground Art School! We are a magazine and blog devoted to advocating the work of art students, graduates, and supa fresh professionals new to the art + design world. We call ourselves Underground Art School because all growth begins at the roots.
Ok, so we aren’t a “real” school, but we are a group of people linked by the same common ground (to be creative professionally and personally) so yes, we are definitely a school. Our diplomas are the tangible pieces of art we make! Plus, sometimes, art schools don't drop enough knowledge. So we try to help those in artistic peril.
We publish a print and pdf magazine chock full 'o' art + design + interviews + how to articles. Our mission is to support currently enrolled students get the most out of their creativity while in school, and to help promote recent grads + emerging artists who are beginning their career. We strive to connect students, schools, professors, and presidents to the global creative community.
We believe education is a personal choice and that learning does not stop once you've left the classroom. Our magazine and blog showcases visual art + design and provides articles relevant to students to help them receive a positive experience while in school and to young professionals who want to apply art into a career. We also commission pieces and collaborate with students, young guns, and readers. Art and student are subjective terms, because aren’t we all learning from our own creative form no matter the level of skill? Therefore, if you are an art student, let us know!
Each issue has a theme. We hold open calls for work, of which, the application changes depending upon the theme. Sometimes we commission you, or maybe we’d like to have an interview, perhaps even feature your work. Regardless of how we get in touch (send us your links!), it’s all a collaboration and it’s all good.
We provide you with two options to own Underground Art School Magazine. The first is a print version, the second (and newly added) is the pdf download option.
PRINT: Racheal Anilyse (uh, she's the Creative Director) makes Underground Art School Magazine and Magcloud Inc. prints and ships them. Magcloud currently ships to US, UK, and Canada, but they are expanding shipping constantly. We heart zee Magcloud because you DO NOT need to sign up for an account on their site to purchase! Yes, you do need a Paypal or credit card to buy, just like every other internet site that sells goods.
Magcloud is an HP company that is revolutionizing the way for independent publishers such as Underground Art School to reach an awesome span of readers (we're in Connecticut, where are you?) at very low costs for the publisher (that's definitely us) and readers (that's hopefully you). We are excited to be a part of this print on demand revolution. Viva la magazine!
PDF: Requested by our readers and friends, we will be providing you with the option to buy our magazine in PDF form. Paper or pdf? Potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto. This way our friends from around the globe can now read and connect and let us know what art and education are like in their part of the art world.
Meet the Underground Team. We are a group of professional artists and art students. We work hard. We play hard. We create like crazy. It's nice to meet you!
Racheal Anilyse | Director & Designer
Racheal is the designer, art director, at times author/interviewer-er, blog keeper upper-er, and the hand drawing typographer of the Underground. She graduated from Hartford Art School with a degree in Illustration, minor in Visual Communication Design & Art History. If you'd like to collaborate with Underground Art School please email Racheal at undergroundartschool@yahoo.com.
Caroline Lampinen | Editor
Caroline loves editing. The BFA in graphic design she will acquire in May isn't nearly as close to her heart as her minors in English and Business. From art school, or just plain school, she learned the huge (and relieving) lesson that your major doesn't have to determine the rest of your life -- it's just a really wonderful opportunity to learn things and figure yourself out!
Sydney Rose | Photographer & Apprentice
Sydney is our in-house photographer. She's a freshman photography student at the Fashion Institute of Technology! We throw her into learning by having her take some of our photos for our advertisements and blog. Sydney also lends a hand [sometimes voice or killer dance moves] in the making of our videos. She hates this photo which is why we leave it up here. Haha, sucka.
Gina Furnari | Blogger
Gina is a 2009 graduate of The Hartford Art School and creator of "non-traditional" paintings. She works as the Education Assistant/New Media Developer intern for The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut, and is also the New media consultant for The Clyde Otis Music Group in New Jersey. Gina writes our blog series Tipping Points: Guidance toward Creative Action.
Fiona Clark [aka Wee Fi] | Blogger
Fi is an artist working and living in New York City. Fiona graduated in 2007 from Hartford Art School with a major in Visual Communication Design and minors in Photography and Art History. After graduation, she found herself freelancing with the staffing agency Creative Group, before landing a job as junior designer at the rich media company Basik Group. She enjoys English breakfast tea, red nail polish, spontaneous dance parties, and her pet turtle, Jamie. Fiona writes our blog series Applied Arts: Putting Your Art to Work.
